How to reach us:
My name is JJ Vancil and I have the opportunity to serve as the Executive Director of Seattle Youth for Christ (YFC). I’ve been in my current role for less than a year, but have been a part of the national movement of YFC for over seven years.
Compelled by the love of Jesus, Seattle YFC is committed to raise up lifelong followers of Jesus from at-risk populations. Our focus, therefore, is on three categories of young people in the greater Seattle region: kids in low-income neighborhoods through our City Life Ministry; pregnant or parenting teens through our Parent Life Ministry; kids in jail through our Juvenile Justice Ministry. In each area of ministry, we seek to engage young people in a Christ-sharing relationship with a caring adult, equip them with essential life skills and the knowledge of God’s love for them, and empower them to follow Jesus, join a local church, and become a leader in their community. I am passionate about this mission because it is in alignment with the very heart of God. We operate between Luke 4:18-19 (He has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor…” and Matthew 25:40 Whatever you did to the least of these brothers of mine, you did to me.)
I am very grateful to serve as an Alderwood Community Church missionary and share a like-minded passion to see young people come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and become a part of the local church. Alderwood has been a church partner for many years and the scores of kids transformed as a result is significant!
I have been married for over 12 years to my incredibly spunky, fun, creative, godly, and beautiful wife, Katy. Together, we have two kids: Owen (7) and Nora (2). As a family, we prioritize adventures together, time outside, reading good books, laughing a lot, talking about Jesus, practicing gratitude, and serving our community. There is never a dull moment in the Vancil household and we couldn’t be more grateful for the investment that mentors, family members and friends have made in our family!
In the words of the Apostle Paul, “I thank my God every time I remember you…because of your partnership in the gospel” (Philippians 1:3,5). You are actively involved in transforming the lives of young people all over the Seattle area. These young people find themselves in tough places...in jail, in low-income neighborhoods, or as a teen parent...but are finding hope in Jesus. I want to introduce you to two of these incredible youth: "M" & "L".
"M" is a young person from South Everett. His family is originally from Iraq and they are practicing Muslims. Last year, "M", while on a Youth for Christ (YFC) weekend retreat on Whidbey Island encountered God in a time of worship. He surrendered his life to Jesus and it has clearly been a “Saul to Paul” conversion as he is now an evangelist committed to sharing the good news with anyone who will listen. While his family still doesn’t support his decision, we are trusting for God to use "M"to bring his parents and siblings to faith in Jesus.
"L" is a young person from East Bellevue. He recently started coming to our new after-school program each and every Wednesday. It is clear that "L" comes from a tough background as both his parents are immigrants from Central America and do not speak English. Being from an immigrant family, "L" has struggled with finding a place to belong. But he has learned that he belongs with YFC. He is beginning to take ownership of the group and comes early each week to set up. While not yet making a profession of faith, "L" is coming to our Middle School Camp at the end of June. At camp, he will hear a clear presentation of the gospel and will have an opportunity to give his life to Jesus.
"M" and "L" are just two stories of the hundreds of kids being impacted each and every week.
In the past year, we have almost doubled our impact with new ministry sites in Bellevue, South Seattle and the King County Juvenile Detention facility. God continues to provide for this work and we are so grateful for the ways Alderwood serves as a partner with us. Thank you!
